| Hydroponic Cucumbers - Virginia, South Australia | | | Demonstration - November 28 th 2009 to 7th January 2010 | | | | | Outcome | | | “The Growgreen treated plants after 2 applications have shown better development, consistent size and in my mind will yield far greater than the untreated” Hin, owner/grower. Dec 15, 2009. | | | |
| Background | | | H & L Hydroponics is a grower of hydroponic tomatoes & cucumbers in Virginia; the market garden region of South Australia. With constant battles to maintain profitable gate prices it is critical for Hin to keep his production costs to a minimum but not impact on his fruit quality.
Key requirements are to produce plants that will resist the disease outbreaks and maintain consistent growth and yiel | | | | What we recommended | | | Apply Profert by foliar spray at 7 ml per 1 liter water & Xtend at 2 ml per 1 liter water. Apply at 7 day intervals | | | Apply Profert through fertigation at 5 ml per 1 liter water Apply at 7 day intervals | | | Mains water (water is recycled through the fertigation system that feeds runoff water back in to holding tanks.) | | | | Results achieved | | | After two applications the GG treated plants are half the size of the untreated. This is of importance as a quicker growing plant will not hold its fruit as well in turn leading to a reduced yield. The untreated hothouses have grown far too quickly, the desired growing pattern is slowly but consistent. | | | The GG treated plants have developed a much thicker leaf than the untreated plants. This highlights a stronger structure and will be of importance when bearing and holding fruit. | | | Hin's observations at this point is that the GG treated Hothouse will have a larger yield than the other 2 hothouses.

| | | | 1. | Foliar application - cost per row - $1.60 (15 rows per hothouse) $24.00 per 1080 plants | | | | | | 2. | Fertigation application – cost per hot house - $7.30 per 1080 plants. | | | | | | 3. | If you would like to know more, contact Matt at

Photos December 15th 2009 | | | | | The Profert treated plants are nearly half the size of the same stake. Importantly the leaf development is thicker and from Hins experience will result in greater fruit bearing and hold. | | | | | 25 Days into the program, Growgreen cucumber plants are in fruit. Hin is very happy as from experience, these plants are developing better than the other plants.
